D
is for the Deep
Made by Crafty B’s
Where to find it
The Deep is Hull’s spectacular aquarium, home to an amazing variety of marine life, where visitors can discover the wonders of our oceans and understand why they need protecting.
We wanted our piece to celebrate both The Deep’s striking waterfront building and the fascinating underwater world it brings to life. Using reclaimed fabric scraps that might otherwise have gone to waste, we have recreated the iconic building as a quilted fabric collage and have woven different hues of blue into the background to create vibrant, textured waves. Knitted and crocheted fish, sea creatures and seaweed complete our underwater scene, bringing it to life through a variety of textile crafts.
By transforming discarded materials into something new, our mural celebrates the creativity of recycling and reusing. It also highlights the importance of reducing waste and protecting our oceans, rivers and the wildlife that depends on them. We hope our artwork inspires others to see the potential in materials that might otherwise be thrown away and reminds us all that small actions can make a difference to the health of our waterways and our planet.
About ‘The Crafty B Club’
We are a group of three long-time friends who carve out time each month to rekindle our love of crafting, share ideas and of course, have a good laugh together. We love trying different crafts, skills and artistic styles, and finding ways to create sustainable, fun and practical items.
We would like to give a special mention and thank you to our honorary Crafty B members who have kindly dedicated lots of their own time to help us bring this project to life.
